Your Mouth's Bacteria May Play a Bigger Role in Blood Pressure Than You Think
A new study from King's College London found that the acidity of saliva can influence how well mouth bacteria convert vegetable nitrate into a compound that helps lower blood pressure.
After you eat nitrate-rich vegetables like spinach, beets, or kale, helpful bacteria living in your mouth convert that nitrate into nitrite. The body then transforms nitrite into nitric oxide, a natural compound that relaxes blood vessels and helps lower blood pressure.
Researchers at King's College London wanted to know whether the chemistry of your saliva — specifically its acidity — affects how efficiently that conversion happens.
To test this, they had healthy volunteers chew sugar-containing gum, which is acidic and lowers the pH in the mouth, after drinking a shot of beetroot juice — working from the theory that increasing saliva acidity could speed up this chemical reaction.
The participants who chewed the sugary gum ended up with 45% more nitrite in their saliva and 25% more circulating in their bloodstream compared to those who chewed sugar-free gum.
That change was also linked to a modest but measurable drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
Co-author Dr. Charlotte Mills of the University of Reading noted that the bacteria in our mouths play a critical role in this process, and that the presence of sugar may create a more favorable environment for it.
The researchers are careful to note this was a small, short-term experiment —
the effects were temporary and were not proposed as a therapy.
The next proposed step is a larger study in athletes to better understand how the gum may affect nitrate conversion, blood pressure, and athletic performance.
One practical takeaway stands out for patients thinking about their oral care routine:
researchers noted that antiseptic mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine can interfere with this process by killing the bacteria responsible for nitrate conversion, and that studies have linked chlorhexidine mouthwash use to increases in blood pressure.
While no one is recommending sugary gum as a heart-health strategy, the findings add to a growing picture of the mouth's oral microbiome as an active player in overall cardiovascular health — not just a bystander.
