Treating a Silent Tooth Infection May Help Your Blood Sugar, Study Suggests
New research points to a meaningful link between deep tooth root infections and blood sugar disruption — and shows that treating those infections may offer benefits that extend well beyond the mouth.
A growing body of research, highlighted in coverage from May 2026, is drawing renewed attention to a connection many dentists have long suspected:
hidden tooth infections may be linked to blood sugar problems, with deep infections around tooth roots creating chronic inflammation that spreads through the body and may interfere with insulin function.
The condition at the center of this research is called apical periodontitis —
an infection around the tip of the tooth root.
What makes it particularly notable is that
these deep, often painless infections may influence health far beyond the mouth.
The proposed mechanism is straightforward:
when bacteria spread into the surrounding tissues, the immune system is activated, and if the infection continues over time, it can trigger low-grade inflammation — a persistent immune response that enters the bloodstream and can interfere with normal blood sugar control, because chronic inflammation makes it more difficult for cells to take up sugar from the blood.
A longitudinal metabolomic study published in the Journal of Translational Medicine by researchers including those at King's College London found that successful endodontic treatment improves glucose and lipid metabolism.
People who underwent root canal treatment often experienced better blood sugar control and reduced inflammation afterward.
An earlier animal study also found that
infected animals developed measurable signs of insulin resistance and altered immune function — the infection did not stay local, but triggered a systemic immune response that interfered with glucose processing.
Researchers and clinicians are careful to keep the findings in perspective.
Experts urge caution, clarifying that root canal treatment should not be viewed as a standalone solution for diabetes management, and that the improvements observed depend on individual circumstances.

the findings draw attention to the need for an integrated approach to health care that encompasses both dental and general medical practices
