Treating a Hidden Tooth Infection May Help More Than Just Your Mouth

A new study from King's College London finds that successfully resolving a deep tooth-root infection may also improve blood sugar control and reduce whole-body inflammation.

New research suggests that treating certain dental infections could help lower inflammation associated with heart disease while also improving blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

The study,

a longitudinal metabolomic analysis published in the Journal of Translational Medicine by researchers including scientists at King's College London,

tracked patients before and after they received endodontic treatment — commonly known as a root canal.

A deep tooth infection may seem like a local problem, but researchers are increasingly looking at how it might affect the rest of the body. The condition in question is apical periodontitis, an infection around the tip of the tooth root.

These infections are not always confined to the tooth itself. When bacteria spread into the surrounding tissues, the immune system is activated. If the infection continues over time, it can trigger low-grade inflammation — a persistent immune response that remains active rather than resolving. This ongoing inflammation can enter the bloodstream and affect the rest of the body, and it can interfere with normal blood sugar control because chronic inflammation makes it more difficult for cells to take up sugar from the blood.

Studies found that people who underwent root canal treatment often experienced better blood sugar control and reduced inflammation afterward.

A prospective cohort published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine measured blood markers in patients with apical periodontitis before and after endodontic retreatment. Patients with active root infections had elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, one of the most reliable indicators of systemic inflammation.

Researchers and clinicians are careful to keep the findings in perspective.

Experts urge caution, clarifying that root canal treatments should not be viewed as a standalone solution for diabetes management. The moderate improvements observed depend heavily on individual circumstances, including the complexity of the infections and the patient's overall health status.

The findings draw attention to the critical need for an integrated approach to health care that encompasses both dental and general medical practices.

For patients, the practical takeaway is straightforward: a painless tooth infection is still an infection worth finding and treating.
