Lab Study Finds Nano-Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste Can Rebuild Early Tooth Decay
A 2026 laboratory study published in the Journal of Dentistry found that nano-hydroxyapatite toothpastes can meaningfully restore minerals to early cavity lesions, adding to growing evidence for a fluoride-free remineralization option.
A study published in the Journal of Dentistry earlier this year tested several toothpaste formulations containing hydroxyapatite — a mineral compound closely related to what teeth are naturally made of — against fluoride toothpaste to see how well each could repair the earliest stages of tooth decay. Researchers created controlled cavity-like lesions on enamel samples in the lab and then measured how much mineral was restored after treatment with each product.
The researchers found that nanohydroxyapatite toothpaste was effective at remineralizing early caries lesions, and that hydroxyapatite can serve as a non-fluoride alternative for cavity remineralization.
Notably,
combining two forms of the mineral — nanoXIM and nanoHAP — enhanced the overall effectiveness compared to using either one alone.
The findings land in a rapidly expanding market.
