Dentistry's Professional Bodies Take Steps Toward Bringing Saliva Testing Into the Clinic
The American Dental Association convened researchers, insurers, and regulators this summer to tackle the practical barriers standing between promising saliva-based diagnostics and everyday dental care.
Saliva contains a wealth of biological information — proteins, DNA, hormones, and markers of inflammation — and scientists have long recognized its potential as a diagnostic tool. But turning that potential into something a dentist can reliably use during a routine appointment has proven far more complicated than the underlying science alone would suggest. That gap was the focus of a gathering held in Chicago this past June.
Dental researchers, clinicians, industry leaders, and stakeholders from insurance and technology came together at the American Dental Association for a summit held on June 18, with the explicit goal of moving saliva-based tools from emerging science into routine dental practice.
The central question that shaped the day was not whether saliva has potential to support health assessment, but how dentistry can build the standards, workflows, and regulatory approval pathways that would allow dentists to use salivary testing in a consistent, evidence-based way.
Participants identified several specific needs: scientifically validated tests, standardized biomarker reference ranges, clearly defined diagnostic thresholds, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, regulatory approval pathways, and practical workflows for dental offices — along with education for both dentists and patients.
The conversation repeatedly returned to the importance of validated tests and clear guidance on how clinicians should act on results, with one speaker noting that saliva-based tools could help dentistry participate more fully in precision medicine by adding objective biochemical information to traditional clinical exams.
Although participants acknowledged that routine salivary diagnostics are not yet ready for universal clinical adoption, the summit concluded with broad consensus that the science has advanced significantly.
The discussions also reflected growing international interest in precision dentistry, preventive oral healthcare, and early disease detection through non-invasive technologies.
For patients, the practical takeaway is that the profession is now actively working on the infrastructure — not just the science — needed before saliva testing could become a standard part of a dental visit.
