A Robotic System Just Prepared Human Teeth for Crowns With Near-Surgical Precision
A first-in-human study found that a semi-automated dental robot could shape teeth for crowns with extraordinary accuracy and deliver the finished restoration the same day — no second appointment needed.
Getting a dental crown has traditionally meant at least two visits: one to shape the tooth and take an impression, and a return trip weeks later to have the permanent crown placed. A newly published first-in-human study, evaluated in Nature Evidence-Based Dentistry, suggests a robotic approach could compress that process into a single appointment.
The study tested a semi-automated robotic tooth preparation system (SARP) that digitally preplans the entire procedure and then carries it out with sub-50-micrometer precision, allowing a custom restoration to be manufactured in advance and delivered the same day.
Among the six patients who completed the procedure, no adverse events occurred. The robot's actual cuts deviated from the planned shape by an average of just 39 micrometers, and in five of the six cases the crown achieved a good-to-excellent fit and was permanently cemented that same visit. All participants reported no pain during or after the procedure.
The researchers conclude that the system has the potential to enhance procedural precision, reduce treatment times, and improve patient satisfaction while increasing overall practice efficiency.
In principle, automating this step could shorten treatment times and reduce the total number of appointments a patient needs.
Larger, controlled trials are currently planned to validate these results, assess long-term outcomes, and explore whether the approach could help expand access to restorative dental care.
This work is part of a broader wave of robotic research in the field.
A separate team at the University of Basel has also developed a miniature intraoral robot — roughly the size of a wine cork — designed to scan and prepare a tooth for a crown in a single appointment while fitting comfortably inside the patient's mouth.
Both projects remain at an early stage, and neither system is yet in routine clinical use. For patients, the practical takeaway is that the multiple-visit crown process, long accepted as simply how things are done, is now under active scrutiny from engineers as well as dentists.
