A Bioengineered Chewing Gum Shows Promise Against Oral Viruses and Bacteria Tied to Head and Neck Cancer
New lab research from the University of Pennsylvania found that a specially formulated bean-based chewing gum sharply reduced HPV and two harmful bacteria in oral samples from cancer patients, without disturbing the mouth's beneficial microbes.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Dental Medicine have published findings suggesting that a bioengineered chewing gum may be able to reduce key microbial threats associated with head and neck cancer. The study, led by Henry Daniell and published in the journal Scientific Reports, tested oral samples from patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma — a cancer that forms in the tissues lining the mouth and throat and is often diagnosed late, when outcomes tend to be poor.
The gum is made from lablab beans and contains a naturally occurring antiviral protein called FRIL. In laboratory tests on patient saliva and oral rinse samples, extracts from the gum reduced HPV levels by up to 93 percent. A separate formulation of the same gum, loaded with an antimicrobial peptide called protegrin-1, brought two bacteria — Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum — down by more than 99 percent. Both bacteria have been linked to worse survival outcomes in head and neck cancer patients. Importantly, the treatment appeared to leave the mouth's beneficial bacteria intact, which is a meaningful distinction from broader antimicrobial approaches that can disrupt the oral microbiome.
The researchers see two potential uses for a product like this: as a supportive add-on alongside existing cancer treatment, and as a preventive measure against HPV transmission in the mouth. That said, these results come from ex vivo lab work — meaning tests on patient samples outside the body — rather than from clinical trials in living patients. The team has identified clinical trials as the necessary next step before any conclusions can be drawn about real-world effectiveness.
For dental patients, the study is a reminder of how closely the mouth's microbial environment can be connected to serious disease beyond the gums and teeth. While medicated chewing gum is not a treatment anyone should seek out on their own right now — the product tested here is not commercially available — the research points toward a potentially low-cost, non-invasive tool that could one day complement conventional oral and cancer care.
